Welcome to Mrs Prescotts Wikispace.

Welcome to Room 8 2018

What a great few weeks we have had to start the term!

Most days we have learnt something new about our classmates in many different ways, through our All About Me Cubes, through working with different people each day and by completing fun challenges!

We have also explored the ideas in the text: The Gossip Monster

leveled readers and worksheets (membership and samples)

Through exploring this text, using prediction, identifying key events/ideas, reflecting, discussing and identifying meanings of words we have learnt:

- That talking about others can be very hurtful.

- That one small comment can grow and grow until it becomes out of control.

- That we should not jump to conclusions or make assumptions.

- That respecting others is most important

- That we should not put others down or talk about others to make ourselves noticed or feel popular.

We are also choosing a country to learn more about so we can get a better understanding of the lives of others, their culture, challenges and other significant information about the country.

We will be challenging ourselves to learn a new language – French!

Awesome start to Term 2!!!

We challenged ourselves to work with someone different today, to crack a code and solve the riddle, and we discovered that working with someone different was a good thing!

We also investigated what would happen when we mix milk and dish washing liquid:

Check out the Action A Video of the experiment.

Through this experience we are learning the vocabulary used for procedure writing, the features, how to do observational drawings, record observations, results, research and write a conclusion in preparation for this terms Science Fair.

Now What?

We saw what happened- Why did it happen? What was the science behind it? What is it about these substances that cause the reaction to take place?

Keep checking in as we find out!

Resilience:

As part of our inquiry we are discussing resilience-

Resilience is the ability to adapt and to ‘bounce back’ when unexpected things happen.
What do we do when something doesn’t work out as we expect?

Perhaps we get upset, start yelling, hit out at someone…. or simply give up. However, none of these reactions will help us to overcome the challenges that we face.

Resilience means being able to adjust to changing circumstances, and to respond in a positive way. Resilient people can handle change and think of ways to solve problems that happen in their lives.Sometimes these problems may be small ones:

Lucy really wanted to wear her red t-shirt today, but it’s in the wash. She could get angry and feel that her whole day is ruined – or she could be disappointed, but then refocus on finding an alternative shirt to wear. Some challenges might be bigger, and out of our control:

Sam’s family is moving away to a different city. Sam and Josh have been friends all through school – they don’t want to be separated! Although they are sad and upset about it, they can make a strategy to make the best of their situation – perhaps it might be to email and phone each other, so they can still be in touch regularly.

We face challenges every day, in every area of our lives. Not getting picked for a team at lunchtime; having rain cancel a Saturday morning sports game; being sick on the day of a friend’s birthday party; or not getting words right in a spelling test when we have studied – we face unexpected events all the time. And, while it is important to be mature and responsible in our reactions, it is also important to remember that it is OK to feel angry, or sad, or disappointed when things go wrong. If we can acknowledge our feelings while staying in control of our actions, we are acting in a resilient manner.

How can I be more resilient?

• Accept that change happens – and will continue to happen - throughout life. Although we will make lots of decisions ourselves that change our lives, many other changes will be out of our control.

• Be positive about ourselves. Remember that you are special and unique, nobody else is just like you! Being positive and remembering our strengths can help us to deal with challenges.

• Keep things in perspective, and look at situations from more than one viewpoint. Remember that all things change over time, and even things that feel very difficult now will get better.

• Build positive relationships. Having people around us who are supportive and encouraging – whether they are parents, friends, uncles or aunts, teachers, or youth leaders - means that we have trustworthy people to go to when we need help and advice.

• Help others. Do some fund-raising for a charity, or help elderly people in the community.

• Set goals. Working towards – and achieving - a realistic goal helps us to build confidence and self-esteem.

Our first day back was full of discussions about what we want our learning environment to be like. We viewed a video about the brain and how we learn then in groups came up with rules that we wanted in our class so that learning can happen.

The Learning Brain

In Room 8 we-

1.Treat each other and property with respect.
2. Work at the appropriate voice level for the task.
3. Listen to the person speaking and respond appropriately.

5. Respond when we have challenges (Not React).

6.Make good choices and do our best.

We also talked about how we can make a difference in the world and viewed a video of a 12 year old boy who wanted to turn sadness upside down!

'He looks at sadness and turns it upside down': 12-yr-old Campbell makes teddy bears for sick kids

We finished our day with art- using patterns and pictures to design a brick with our names to make a class wall. We talked about each brick being strong but together the can build a wall that is even stronger. We then discussed what can happen if one of the bricks was weakened in some way.

"Alone we are strong, Together we are stronger!"
